When Marc Bregman started his term as YAT Chair last September, he had a clear vision of what he wanted to accomplish. He saw a solid foundation in place and hoped to build on that foundation by formalizing state leadership, increasing the number of YAT-related educational programs and helping local YATs get programming and events off the ground.

He’s done all that and more. Under his leadership, it’s become easier for local associations to report the names of their YAT contacts to the state and national associations. Late last year, NAIFA’s Member Benefits Department released a Program in a Box especially for YATters, titled, “Survive and Thrive During Your First Three Years.” YAT will be in the spotlight at NAIFA’s annual convention that starts this weekend, with new initiatives for young advisors. And the stage is set for a new year under the leadership of incoming National YAT Chair Greg Bailey, FSS.

“I will always be a part of YAT.”

— Marc Bregman

Bregman credits outgoing NAIFA President David E. Smithkey, CLU, RFC, and Trustee Robert Miller with helping him develop a team-oriented leadership style, and the YAT committee for being a wellspring of creativity. “The great thing about the committee is that all of the members have a lot of passion for YAT and have made sacrifices in order to participate fully,” he says.

YAT at the NAIFA convention
YAT will be very active at the NAIFA convention this year. In fact, many YATters are converging upon San Francisco for the convention right now. The meeting has more events and activities just for them than ever before. There’s a meet-and-greet especially for YATters, a roundtable discussion with the YAT committee, a happy hour, and a YAT-sponsored educational workshop.

And the advisors profiled in Advisor Today’s “Four Under Forty” article will provide more information about the tips and techniques they use to build a highly successful practice during a panel on Tuesday, Aug. 29. If you can’t make it to the convention, tune in to John Enright’s and Brent Spicuzza’s sales ideas here. Both Enright and Spicuzza were profiled in the Advisor Today article.

Bregman hopes all the YATters who attend the convention will participate in YAT PAC. He stresses the fact that the purpose of the YAT PAC initiative is to encourage young advisors to pitch in. “We’re going to be tracking the number of YATters who donate,” he says. “Let’s show NAIFA our commitment to advocacy.”

A YATter for life
Bregman says that he will remain involved in YAT even after his term as chair is over.  He has enjoyed leading the committee and looks forward to slowing down and being able to participate more as a committee member. “I’m eager to work on some of the projects we’re starting,” he says. “I will always be a part of YAT, no matter how old I get or whether I’m on the committee or not.” He also intends to become more active in NAIFA and YAT leadership at the local and state levels.

But as he continues to move up, he wants more advisors to follow in his footsteps. “YAT leadership is a stepping stone for YATters to become more involved in the big league and make more of an impact on NAIFA,” he says. “To do that, we need fresh ideas and new voices. Other YATters can step up to the plate.
