Autumn is here, and with it comes a new NAIFA year. As it gets underway, let’s look at where your Young Advisors Team national committee has been over the past year and where we are headed. I’d like to share with you some good news about what YAT has accomplished in the past year, and what challenges and opportunities are before us.

Looking back—a great start
The number of YATs across the country has more than doubled in the past year—from 40 YAT groups in 2005 to 94 in 2006! This is a tremendous growth rate, but we have more to do.

As we move forward, you’ll be hearing from YAT national committee members for your feedback, suggestions and success stories.

NAIFA has 786 local associations, each of which would benefit from having its own Young Advisors Team. In the coming year, we will be helping states and locals without YAT groups to start them. As we move forward, you’ll be hearing from YAT national committee members for your feedback, suggestions and success stories. If your local association doesn’t have a YAT group, contact us and we’ll help you get one started. We will also continue to deliver new programs as well as mentoring and educational initiatives that will assist you in growing your local YAT group—all part of the strategic plan that was developed last fall.

We need your presence
Boosting membership is one of NAIFA’s most important goals right now. We are poised to help: With more active local YAT groups, we can help increase NAIFA membership and develop future NAIFA leaders, bringing new vitality and renewed energy to the entire federation. Take advantage of the networking and leadership opportunities available to you through NAIFA and YAT. Sign up for the Leadership in Life Institute (LILI). Come to the 2007 convention. In short, everyone—you, your friends and colleagues, your peers and mentors, and your local, state and national association—stands to gain with more local associations starting and embracing their Young Advisors Team.

We’re also increasing our commitment to advocacy, another important part of NAIFA’s mission. Next September, we will converge in Washington, D.C., for NAIFA’s national convention and career conference. Our challenge is to commit to attend this convention and bring two or three other YATters with us. We’ve set the ambitious goal to have 500 YATters at the convention and participating in the Day on the Hill advocacy event, during which you will have a chance to meet with your congressional representatives. Plus, as a young advisor, you will get a discount on your convention registration. Help us meet this goal so that our senators and representatives will hear loud and clear that we, as young advisors, are actively engaged in protecting the future of our industry.

As I said in San Francisco, I am humbled and honored to serve as your Young Advisors Team chairman. Please contact me at any time with your ideas and feedback. And join us in growing NAIFA’s future!
