As the nation reflects on the past century, our magazine takes a retrospective look at its not uneventful history, tracing its progress from the first issue in 1906 to this farewell to the 20th century issue—the last under the LAN banner. The story of producing 1,120 issues through periods of peace and war, along with the economic swings of prosperity and depression, reveals much about the succession of writers and managers, copy editors and production designers who burnt the midnight oil to get the magazine out to the readers, no matter what. And although we take on a new name with the new millennium, the old commitment is the same: to inspire, inform and sometimes to disturb the laborers in the field.

Under successive editors Ed Keenan, Ian MacKenzie and Jeff Kosnett, the magazine expands to 160 pages, shared equally between advertising and editorial matter, improves in quality and undergoes several face-lifts—keeping pace with advances in production technology and graphic design.

Cost of Doing Business: My Favorite Client

I am struck by this thought: If this were my daughter in the wheelchair, would I love her as much as Maxine loves Beth? Could I make my needs completely secondary to the task of serving her? And then could I do as the Book of James instructs and "consider it all joy"? The questions stagger me.
